The spontaneous emergence of patterns is ubiquitous in nature and leads to systems of extraordinary beauty. Since patterns are formed out of non-equilibrium states, understanding pattern formation remains very challenging and progress relies strongly on innovative experiments.

Our group explores the underlying mechanisms governing pattern formation by following two main lines of research.

We study the growth morphologies of patterns in unstable fluid systems where small perturbations lead to the formation of large-scale structures.

We investigate soft matter systems aiming to assess the relation between structural organization and mechanical properties, which will open routes toward the creation of materials with improved and ultimately tunable properties.
